During the July 4th floods that devastated the Texas Hill Country,
27 Camp Mystic girls lost their lives.
This heartbreaking loss was entirely preventable.
Let’s make sure it never happens again.
Who We Are
The Campaign for Camp Safety is a coalition launched by Camp Mystic victims’ families now seeking action to ensure all children are safe at camps in Texas moving forward.
This special session, the Campaign for Camp Safety is promoting priority bills HB1 and SB1, which they hope will ensure better response and preparedness for future weather events and other risks inherent to the summer camp experience. These parents have also asked state leadership to assign an investigative committee to look into the preventable aspects of what happened at Camp Mystic.
More than 1.5 million children attend more than 1,100 Texas camps every year.*
Every summer that passes without safety reform is another summer we risk the lives of innocent children.
*American Camp Association
Texas does not have sufficient, enforceable safety requirements for camps.
This is includes severe weather preparedness, flood risks and emergency communications.
Families who entrust their kids to camps deserve to know that their children are safe.
Camps should have the same level of safety and emergency response protocols in place as elementary schools and other youth-serving organizations.
We must act now.
The Campaign for Camp Safety is pushing for common-sense, life-saving reforms at Texas summer camps. Passing these safety laws now will give camp administrators the time to prepare and more fully protect children before the 2026 camp season.
Now is the time to contact your Texas State Representatives and Senators and insist that they prioritize and pass strong camp safety laws this special session.
Our children’s safety can’t wait.

Legislation to Prioritize Camp Safety
This crisis has taught us that camps cannot self-regulate. This Campaign supports common-sense legislation, regulation and safety protocols for camps, including:
Prevention
Move structures away from flood plains or hazardous areas.
Detection
Require camps to maintain a 24/7 monitoring of alerts and adequate notification systems for emergency situations.
Training
Establish additional standards for evacuation plans and require emergency drills for campers and staff.
Response
Require emergency management to formally trigger a campsite response.
The Campaign for Camp Safety is urging Texans to call on Texas State Representative and Senator to prioritize and pass strong camp safety laws this special session.
